A short summary of our film

We are raising £1,500 to produce the short film Dad about Alzheimer's disease.

This is not a story about curing diseases or solving problems. It merely captures the daily experiences of families suffering from Alzheimer's disease - helplessness, exhaustion, wandering, arguments, and the occasional moments that soften the heart. We hope to bring this reality to the attention of more people, and also let those in the same situation know that they are not alone.

Who are we?

We are Jiayi Qin, Mohan Jiang and Xianzhe Wei, filmmakers from China. Currently, we are graduate students in the Film and Television Production program at the University of York.

We love movies and even more, we love making movies together. From class assignments to independent short films, we have collaborated many times and are the most harmonious creative partners for each other. We believe that the most touching light lies within ordinary stories.

our story

The film Dad tells such a story: Emily is about to send his sick father Mike to a nursing home. However, on the way, Mike gets lost. When Emily finally finds Mike, she sees that Mike holds a birthday cake tightly in his arms. At that moment, she understands: Mike forgets everything, but Mike never forgets loving her.

I am Jiayi Qin, the director of this film. This story is based on my own personal experience. My grandmother was a patient with Alzheimer's disease. She forgot many things, but never forgot my name. Since my undergraduate years, she had been encouraging me to pursue my dream of becoming a filmmaker bravely. On December 15th last year, I missed her last phone call due to jet lag. By January of the following year, the news of her death had already reached me. This is a regret that I will never be able to make up for in my entire life. This film is my letter to her.

Your donation won't cure this disease, but it will make this film accessible to everyone. Every pound will be used to cover the actual production costs such as venue, equipment, and post-production. Your support will help a young director turn a personal regret into a public work - letting more families who are going through the same pain know that they are not alone. And it will also help those who are lucky enough not to have experienced it to learn to cherish sooner.

Where will the money go?

To ensure the smooth progress of the project, we have set the minimum target at £500, but our total needed is £1500, which is broken down in more detail below. If we reach our minimum target, the money will go directly toward the crew's food and accommodation, purchasing and arranging props for the shooting locations, and transportation costs.

If the final amount raised exceeds our target, after deducting all production costs, we will contact the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships to ensure any additional funds are directed to the University of Opportunity fund, which you can read more about here - https://www.york.ac.uk/opportunity/
