A short summary of our project
This trip is focused on creating academic and social connections between students of the University of York and University of Ghana. We believe this is central to continuously decolonising research and expanding collaboration between discourses surrounding sustainability and development. Our aim is to work with local organisations collecting primary data on international and national impacts on the socioeconomic structure and conditions in Ghana. Individual projects will provide cross-cultural data and research that will support academia at the University of Ghana and York alike. Please donate now to help us reach our goals! Also, YuFund will match your donations up to £1000 so every donation counts twice as much.
Who are We?
We are a group of Politics and Global Development undergraduates keen to understand Development dynamics in Ghana. We have a shared interest in creating a fairer world for all, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will equip us with the knowledge and skills for our future ventures. We believe that there is a huge importance in expanding our worldviews and creating meaningful connections through research collaboration.
Our Story
We are students whose story began with debating the intricacies of international development policy and post-colonial inequalities. Through this, a critical question emerged: What does ‘effective policy’ mean if it ignores local realities? Often, the most pressing challenges - from climate-resilient agriculture to e-commerce waste - are best understood by those who live with their consequences every day.
We are driven by a shared commitment to empowering Ghanaian research and fostering actionable change. Our mission is to provide a platform for effective collaboration with Ghanaian students and help their voices be heard.
This two-week research trip is just the start of our story. Armed with academic theories and questionnaires we expect to observe; we expect to learn. We realise the research we conduct over a singular short study may not generate the most impact, but our hope is to build a lasting bridge of support that will effectively translate in our future worlds of work.
Your donation will be a part of this. It is an investment in the transfer of knowledge and the pursuit of solutions to global challenges. It is an opportunity to help facilitate research that contextually addresses real-world issues in the development sector that could make a purposeful difference.
Where will the money go?
Your funding will help us carry out our research; in small groups, we will be collecting first-hand data for our projects on social, economic and environmental issues. Through this, we hope to broaden the scope of research on Development in Ghana. Your funding can support this by contributing to:
1. Research support from the University of Ghana, including translators and research assistants.
2. Carrying out primary data collection, including local community contributions.
3. Visiting Accra and the Cape Coast for important historical context and further study.
4. Costs for transport, accommodation, expeditions, and research coordination.
