What is RUTTING?

Rutting is a scifi-drama exploring obsession, love, and the animal instincts we pretend we don’t have.

The story follows Lyle and Luisa, a couple desperate to conceive but failing month after month. Their world begins to crumble as friends effortlessly announce pregnancies and the tension between them grows unbearable.

When Lyle discovers that local farmers are using a mysterious red pill to fix an unexplained crisis (animals everywhere have stopped mating) he becomes entangled in a bizarre rural underworld. The pill promises desire, fertility, and “solutions”… but at a terrible cost.

What begins as a shortcut to save his relationship spirals into compulsion, loss of control, and ultimately a terrifying collapse of human and animal boundaries.

Rutting is strange, uncomfortable, tragic, and deeply human. A film about what happens when love becomes survival.

Who Are We?

We are a group of third-year Film and Television Production students at the University of York, working together on our final university project. Over the last three years, we have developed our craft and pushed our creativity, and Rutting is the most ambitious and emotionally complex film we’ve attempted.

This project represents our last chance to create something bold, cinematic, and representative of everything we’ve learned. We can’t wait to share it with you.

Where Will the Money Go?

Rutting takes place across farms, family homes, pubs, and rural landscapes. It also requires carefully designed props, unsettling visual moments, and a grounded yet eerie atmosphere. Your support lets us create this unique world properly.

We’ll be filming in a pub, farmhouse, fields, bedrooms, and kitchens. Each location must feel authentic and visually striking, and these hires come with fees.

From rural farm gear to household props, realistic butcher materials, the iconic red pills, and unsettling details for key scenes.

Our cast and crew will be travelling across Yorkshire to film. These funds keep everyone safe and supported on location.

Long days require fuel. This ensures our team stays energised and healthy during the shoot.

Unpredictable weather, broken props, reshoots, last-minute costs (film sets always need a safety net).

Any remaining funds after shooting will help us submit Rutting to festivals and get the film seen.
