We're raising £1,000 to help bring Fragments of Control to life - a suspense short film exploring the cost of perfection, parental control, and free will in a technology-driven future.
Who are you?
We are Yiqing Yan and Yifei Song, filmmakers from China and currently Master's students in Film and Television Production at the University of York.
Our shared passion for filmmaking has brought us together on numerous projects, from university productions to independent short films. Through each collaboration, we have developed a creative partnership built on trust, curiosity, and a shared vision for meaningful storytelling.
We believe cinema is a powerful way to reflect the world around us. Our goal is to transform real-life issues, social phenomena, and the complexities of human relationships into compelling films that inspire audiences to think, question, and engage with topics that often go unnoticed. By telling stories that are both emotionally resonant and socially relevant, we hope to encourage meaningful conversations and bring greater attention to the challenges shaping our society.
Your story
What if the greatest threat to your freedom came from someone who loved you most?
Fragments of Control follows a teenage boy whose sudden transformation into the "perfect son" hides a terrifying secret. His father has implanted a mind-control chip designed to eliminate disobedience. As his mother uncovers the truth, the family is forced to confront a devastating question:
When does love become control?
Although set in a near future, the film reflects issues we already face today - parental pressure, surveillance technology, AI, privacy and society's obsession with perfection.

We hope Fragments of Control encourages audiences to question the pressures placed upon us by family, society, and technology, and to recognise the importance of individuality, independent thought, and the freedom to make our own choices. We believe that every person deserves the right to think for themselves, choose their own path, and define their own future. Through this film, we hope to raise awareness of these issues and inspire more people to reflect on the world we are creating together.
Where will the money go?
Every contribution will go directly towards bringing Fragments of Control to life.
Our crowdfunding goal is £1,000, which will help cover the essential production costs needed to complete the film in terms of location hire and transportation. The total production budget is approximately £2,300, with the remaining costs being covered through our own contributions and additional support.

- Transportation (cast, crew and equipment) – £200
- Contingency & miscellaneous production expenses – £150
- Meals and refreshments for cast and crew – £800
