About the Cosi Fan Tutte project
This year’s Opera Society summer production is Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte and will take place at National Centre for Early Music on 2nd and 4th June 2016. Our take on this classic Mozart opera will be set in 1980s East Berlin, during Cold War.
The production team
Our production team are a dedicated group of Opera Society members focused on enhancing the skills and opportunities of students as well as having great fun in the process. The team have no input from university staff, meaning that they are responsible for creating the concept, running rehearsals, sorting all the backstage logistics from start to finish. This advances the employability and professional networking for all students involved in the production.
Our vision
Our production of this classic Mozart Opera is definitely unique, as our production team have chosen to portray a modern twist on the plot, setting it in Soviet East Berlin during the 1980s Cold War. This grittier setting immediately brings a lot more realism, and while the show itself is still very farcical and funny, and the music mostly jovial, the laughter may sometimes be slightly uneasy, creating more of a dark comedy than slapstick.
The highly entertaining agenda is love, or lack thereof, as Ferrando and Guglielmo doubt the faithfulness of their lovers - sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. What follows is a dramatic tale of deception, trust and love. Will true love triumph over doubt or will the dark times get the better of the young couples?
So why do we need your help?
Financing large scale productions such as these are expensive! However, the ability to put on a large scale production demonstrates a great deal of commitment, skill, and teamwork. All members of our cast and crew will be able to advance their personal musicianship and management skills. Employers relish students with large skill sets, learnt from opportunities like these, as the initiative for self-development is exactly what they look for when selecting graduates. It is this what makes a York student unique to any other applicant when it comes to applying for jobs.
Where will your money go?
If we hit our target we will be able to fund the hire costs of all materials such as, vocal and orchestral scores and even fund some of the venue costs.
If we raise more than our £500 target we would be able to fund extra marketing materials so that more people can become aware of our brilliant and inspiring student production.
Breakdown of costs:
- Venue Hire - £890
- Travel - £75
- Equipment Hire - £335
- Harpsichord Tuning - £300
- Marketing Materials - £400
Our team will be able keep in touch and give updates every week on how much money our YuStart is raising. This will be done through our official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cosiyoureworthityorkuni
