Give the gift of opportunity and invest in the future of our York students
A very warm welcome to our USA alumni this holiday season.
The year is drawing to a close and we’re all beginning to reflect on past challenges and successes amid the ongoing impact of the COVID pandemic. But it’s also time to look to the year ahead. For many students with dreams of enrolling at York in 2022, they face the financial challenge of being unable to support themselves whilst at university. Please give today to support their dreams. The York Opportunity Scholarship provides a $4,343 living award over three years of undergraduate study to students from less advantaged backgrounds. That works out at just $28 per week, which makes an incredible difference over three years.
The York Opportunity Scholarships places an emphasis on supporting students from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, as well as those who are the first in their families to access higher education, those who have disabilities and those who are living in, or have lived in, the care system in the UK for neglected and abused children and young people.
The York Opportunity Scholarship is there to support students like Sylvia, who is currently studying Social and Political Science at the University of York.
“I sat my GCSEs and A levels when my dad was in prison and quite honestly thought that I'd never get over the trauma of my teenage years to make it to university. To have come from a background as unusual as mine can often make it difficult to feel that you ‘belong’, especially in very competitive spaces, but the York Opportunity Scholarship has made me feel worthy of my place here. I have met some really fantastic people at York whom I now consider to be some of my closest friends. I have found a course which I love and am doing well whilst narrowing down what I want to dedicate my life to.”
At the start of 2020/21, applications for the York Opportunity Scholarship rose by over 50%. Every donation is absolutely vital to make sure we can continue supporting students like Sylvia and others from less advantaged backgrounds - please consider donating today.
