come walk with me!
Having participated in the inaugural The Great York Walk in 2019 with friends and colleagues, I feel sad that this year we have to be asked to do this on our own. So, given how important exercise and social contact are for mental health, I am going to try to involve at least 50 different people in my walks over the next 11 weeks to reach my personal goal of 250 miles. I will ask each person who walks with me to donate a few £ and I will provide the refreshments. We will be joined by my two labradors, Archie and Monty, and each walk will be between 2 and 5 miles (neither the elder dog nor my knees like doing much more than that in one go!). I will be doing a few walks on the Hes East campus if any of my students would like to join us. I should warn everyone that, while dogs are also supposed to be good anti-stress devices, my two are not always impeccably behaved!
All funds raised will be for Mentally Fit York at the University of York. We are all facing enormous challenges right now and I am very aware of how precarious mental health can be - especially among young people dealing with extraordinary uncertainty and change. I can't think of a better cause to support locally and I am determined to do my bit to contribute to the total 25,000 mile walking goal.
Please donate anything you can to help my target and improve mental health in York and beyond! :)
about mentally fit york
My walk will be in aid of Mentally Fit York, which will promote good mental health on a local, national and international scale. Your support will be used to fund initiatives such as 24/7 mental health support for York students and research projects to further our understanding of mental health issues and the barriers to accessing support services.
Your support may also go towards providing suicide prevention training, Mental Health Nursing Scholarships or it could contribute to a range of other initiatives which are decided by an expert panel of mental health and wellbeing researchers, practitioners and advocates.
