Cycling the length of the country so our Women's squad can compete at the level they deserve

This September, a group of UYBC athletes will be cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for a new Women's Boat. The club aims to raise £6000 towards buying the boat, which will allow the women's squad to perform at a higher level. Additionally it will increase the number of Novice rowers we can teach, meaning more students can get into the sport!

who are uybc?

The University of York Boat Club (UYBC) is the largest sports club at UoY with more than 200 members, over half of whom are women. Our Women's squads regularly compete at large regional and national events, including the world famous Henley Women's Regatta. Our Alumni have gone on to represent their country with current members on their way to doing the same. We also have a booming Novice programme putting over 100 new people, both students and staff, in boats every year.

Our story

Our senior squads train on the water an average of 7 times a week, and our boats are feeling the strain. We do as much maintenance as possible but realistically if we want to keep up on raceday, we need the equipment! Our overall target is £20,000 towards which we have already raised some money through a 24 hour rowathon, and through winning the Mars Milk Play Fund competition, but we still have a long way to go! This brings us onto the bikes...

The details

We plan to ride roughly 1500km from Land's End in Cornwall to John O'Groats in Scotland over 12 days, sometimes spending 8+ hours a day in the saddle (ouch!). It's going to challenge us both physically and mentally, but it will be great training to get us pumped and ready for another year on the river!

YorkSport Cycling have kindly offered to help us with our preparations, with everything from use of their awesome facilities, to personal coaching and training programmes, to bike maintenance for the inevitable bike malfunctions that may occur!

Full details of our route can be found here.

How you can help

Of course, the aim of this page is to generate pledges, so any donation would be greatly appreciated, large or small! Thank you!

Of course, there are other ways you can help too!

  • Spread the word - Share this page on all social media, tell your friends, tell their friends, get everyone involved!
  • Come and cheer - On those long days a friendly face and voice would be uplifting; if we're coming through somewhere near you (we probably are if you're a British resident) then come down and show your support!
  • Get on your bike! - If you have a bike, we'd be happy for you to join us for a stage local to you! Maybe you could even get some sponsors of your own!
