This March, a group of UYBC athletes will be climbing the Yorkshire Three Peaks in under 12 hours to raise money for a new club Truck. The club aims to raise £2000 towards buying the vehicle, which will allow our squads to travel to Henley Royal Regatta 2016. Additionally it will increase the number of rowers that can compete for many years to come!
who are uybc?
The University of York Boat Club (UYBC) is the largest sports club at UoY with more than 200 members, over half of whom are women. Our squads regularly compete at large regional and national events, including the world famous Henley Women's Regatta. Our Alumni have gone on to represent their country with current members on their way to doing the same. We also have a booming Novice programme putting over 100 new people, both students and staff, in boats every year.
Our story
Our senior squads train on the water an average of 7 times a week, and our boats are feeling the strain. Over the summer we undertook LEJOG which helped the club secure a large proportion of the funding for a new boat however, our club vehicle was written off in the process. Since the summer we have had to share other clubs vehicles, which has limited our ability to travel to national events and restricted the number of rowers who can compete.
We have done a lot of fundraising throughout the year such as a 24 hour rowathons, a Colour Festival and many more events but we still have a way to go! This brings us onto the hike...
The details
We plan to walk 26 miles with over 2000ft of climbing, up and down the largest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales in less than 12 hours. It's going to challenge us both physically and mentally, but it will be great training to get us pumped and ready for the summer regatta season!
Full details of our route can be found here.
