Roudhan Beckwith (24th March 2003 - 16th June 2023), second year Biology student, passed away following an accident in Brussels, Belgium, leaving his parents (Steve and Josephine) and his younger brother (Dylan).
Roudhan was a part of Halifax College and had passed his second year exams. He was looking forward to his final year. He was thoroughly enjoying his life in York and truly loved the University and the City. He had made many friends and was enjoying playing football for his College. He lived his life to the full and his education was extremely important to him.
Roudhan left behind a legacy of kindness, humor that continues to connect his family and friends. In the face of grief, Steve has channeled his energy into an extraordinary series of fundraising efforts in Roudhan’s memory, supporting the GenerationResearch fund at the University of York. This initiative provides opportunities for less advantaged students to pursue scientific research, something Roudhan himself was passionate about.
Steve has already taken on physically demanding challenges to raise awareness and funds. Last year, he walked 52 miles from his home in Holmfirth to York - a symbolic journey that culminated at the University where Roudhan spent some of his happiest days.
The Current Challenge
This summer, Steve will be taking on the biggest challenge yet: completing six peaks in 48 hours. The endeavor will take him from Ben Nevis to Yorkshire’s Three Peaks - a feat requiring immense physical endurance and mental fortitude.
“Failing is not an option, whatever physical pain I’m in will never compare to the pain of losing Roudhan.”
The fundraising efforts have already raised nearly £35,000 - which will hopefully go beyond £40,000 after this challenge. Every contribution helps sustain scholarships that can support students for years to come.
When asked what Roudhan would think of all this activity in his name, Steve says:
“He’d probably think I’m mad - but he’d be proud.”
For those considering supporting Steve’s efforts or donating to the GenerationResearch fund, it’s not just about Steve or Roudhan, it’s about helping create scientists who will change the world.
Thank you.
Steve, Jo and Dylan.
